Street food
Palermo is worldwide famous for its street-food.
Almost
everywhere there is a place where you can taste some street-food
specialities.
But
you can't say you have been in Palermo if you don't
taste granita, ice-cream brioches (a
kind of croissants with ice-cream) and arancine !
Palermo's
cuisine is very rich and varied. And sicilian
cassata and cannoli pastries are
traditional symbols of the different influences of the dominations of
Arabs and Normans.
What
to taste?
- arancine (fried rice with meat or cheese in a sperical shape)
- sfincione (a kind of pizza)
- pane cunzato (bread with sliced tomatoes, cheese, anchovies, salt, pepper, origano and olive oil)
- granita (dessert made from crushed ice and sugar mixed with various flavorings)
- Pani ca' meusa (pane con la milza- spleen sandwich)
- Stigghiole (parts of intestines of lambs)
- Cannoli (cookies with ricotta cream)
- Brioche con gelato (ice-cream brioche)
- Pane con panelle (sandwich with panelle, gram flour fritters)
